Privacy policy

This policy explains what personal data Iceland Map (icelandmap.is and the Iceland Map app) collects, why, and the choices you have.

Who we are

Iceland Map is run by When in Iceland ehf., Bæjargil 75, 210 Garðabær, Iceland. We are responsible for your personal data. Questions about privacy: info@icelandmap.is.

Using the map without an account

• Saved places. Places you save to “My trip” are kept only on your own device (in your browser or the app), not on our servers.
• Your location. If you use “Near me” or drive alerts, your device shares your location with the map so it can show nearby places. It is used on your device only and is not stored by us. You can turn it off at any time in your browser or phone settings.
• Map and fonts. The map tiles come from OpenStreetMap and the fonts from Google Fonts. Like any website, these services receive your IP address when they send the files to your browser.
• We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.

If you create an account

You can sign in with your email address or with Google. We then store:

• your email address (and, with Google sign-in, the name and profile details Google shares with us),
• the places you save and, when available, your itinerary and trip dates,
• whether you have agreed to receive marketing emails, and when.

We use this to keep your trip in sync across your devices and to provide the service you signed up for (legal basis: performing our agreement with you).

Marketing emails

We only send you trip tips and offers if you tick the box to agree. If you do, we share your email address, your saved places and your trip dates with our email service, Mailchimp (Intuit Inc.), so we can send emails that are relevant to your trip, for example about activities you have saved. You can unsubscribe at any time with the link in every email or in your account settings (legal basis: your consent).

Bookings

When you book an activity, the booking is handled by our booking partner Bókun and the tour operator. The details you enter there are covered by their privacy policies.

Who processes your data for us

• Supabase: stores accounts and saved trips,
• Google: only if you choose “Continue with Google”,
• Mailchimp: only if you agree to marketing emails,
• our web host, which serves icelandmap.is.

Some of these providers may store data outside Iceland and the EEA. Where they do, they use the safeguards required by law, such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. We never sell your personal data.

How long we keep it

We keep your account data until you delete your account. Marketing consent lasts until you unsubscribe. You can delete your account at any time in the app under Sign in › Delete my account, which removes your account and everything saved in it.

Your rights

You have the right to access your data, correct it, delete it, receive a copy of it, object to its use and withdraw your consent at any time. To use these rights, email info@icelandmap.is. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Icelandic Data Protection Authority, Persónuvernd.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page.
